The cover image of my poetry chapbook...

my poetry chapbook hath been released....for details, go to: here.

I'm going to re-post the blurb that a very cool cat composed for my humble poetic pamphlet....and now, here's Tony-

In "Caterwaul From Below," Steve O'Connor seeks to find the cosmic in the mundane – finding inspiration and insight in random encounters with friends, homeless people, barroom nights, baseball games, and interactions with future and former lovers. His work fuses simply observed details of such daily events with philosophical insight into the workings of the world, the hunt for inspiration (see especially "Chasing The Muse"), and the unrelenting desire for connection to something larger. In this collection, O'Connor recounts the opening steps of a lifelong journey toward that connection, and invites the reader along. I invite you, as well, to join him on the journey.

"....I watched you get the things that you could buy
Raise your arms and try to fly
Face turned up towards the sun
Nothing that you dare deny
Because it's hunger that feeds you, hunger that bleeds you
Falling forward into nothing catching at the air
And everything still out of reach..."

Steve O'Connor, Caterwaul from Below: selected poems 2005-2008
This
chapbook collects a variety of O'Connor's poetry from the past few
years and superimposes them over photographs by Doug Reilly. There are
three general types of poems here: the ones on women, which tend to be
happy memories of sexual encounters (or near misses); youth and the
distance age gives us from it (with new perspectives on parties with
bongs, strip pokers, friends, the strange paths life offers us and much
more); and, finally, the state of modern life today- viewed here
through a slightly caustic punk's eye.

Some of the poems
explore what is quintessentially American in my view: baseball games
with family and friends, conversations that last all night in diners or
fields, fueled by joints or coffee, bike rides and walks through
grid-like cities, college parties that are the same all over North
America. Doug Reilly's photos show the bare landscape of America's
dilapidated side: inner city buildings, telephone wires, spaces empty
of people.

These poems are deceptively short and paired down.
Some catch you straight away and some need to be revisited a few times
before they sink in. One or two may not have enough punching power to
knock you over, but if you are willing to stick with them, peeling each
layer away like an artichoke, you'll find something in the end which
I'm sure O'Connor will be more than glad to cook for you.

I recently edited my earlier post to include links to info about Michelle Tea. Well, for those of you who missed that entry, and/or don't feel like backtracking, here's a quotation that I've pulled from an interview with her:

Poetry can be so vague and personal and I really love that about it but I think it's also what makes people think they don't 'get' poetry. It's often ungettable. But a straightforward rant is easily grasped. People understand it and then they're not being made to feel stupid by poetry and don't resent the poem. I mean of course it is never the poem's fault when a person feels dumb cause they don't think they get it, but you know the cycle of literary abuse I'm talking about, probably.

Yoinked from Tony. I definitely disagree with their assertion that people with the below result dislike new experiences. However, the rest is (mostly) spot on.

Your result for What Your Taste in Art Says About You Test...

Balanced, Secure, and Realistic.

10 Impressionist, 7 Islamic, 2 Ukiyo-e, -5 Cubist, -15 Abstract and -3 Renaissance!

Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects. Impressionist paintings are balanced, use colored shadows, use pure color, broken brushstrokes, thick paint, and scenes from everyday life or nature.

People that like Impressionist paintings may not alway be what is deemed socially acceptable. They tend to move on their own path without always worrying that it may be offensive to others. They value friendships but because they also value honesty tend to have a few really good friends. They do not, however, like people that are rude and do not appreciate the ideas of others. They are secure enough in themselves that they can listen to the ideas of other people without it affecting their own final decisions. The world for them is not black and white but more in shades of grey and muted colors. They like things to be aestically pleasing, not stark and sharp. There are many ways to view things, and the impresssionist personality views the world from many different aspects. They enjoy life and try to keep a realistic viewpoint of things, but are not very open to new experiences. If they are content in their live they will be more than likely pleased to keep things just the way they are.
